Profile: “Why did I not choose to work as a lawyer in a large company?” … An interview with Yuliia Voronkova, NRC legal officer in Ukraine

Because I wanted to see the results of my work.

Here, at NRC, I don’t have a single day that looks like another. When I wake up, I realise that here I will talk with friends and help people. And the realisation that I can be useful every day motivates me,” says Yuliia.

Yuliia Voronkova has been a member of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) legal team in Ukraine since 2016.

In February 2022, the escalation of the war took away her home for the second time and forced her to flee again to another city. Today, Yuliia brings hope to those who, like her, have suffered and lost because of the war.

Sometimes they say something like: ‘You live in peace here and you don’t know what it’s like to lose everything,’ and then I tell them that this is the second time I’ve lost my home and found myself in this situation,” says Yuliia.

“After that, a person starts to open up more, to trust, and to talk about their problems. I have always said that the work of a lawyer is not just about working with paper. A lawyer should also be a psychologist.”

“We change the ‘before’ and ‘after’ of a person’s world.”

She considers achieving a clear result to be the most important part of her work.

“We change the ‘before’ and ‘after’ of a person’s world,” she continues. “If, for example, a person comes to us with some scepticism, they leave with a clear roadmap for the way forward and a desire to fight for themselves.”
