There’s lot of lawyers about these days who aren’t the darlings of the powers that be, let’s support them.
Media Briefing on the Day of Endangered Lawyers (24/01/2017)
You are cordially invited to attend a media briefing hosted by the China Human Rights Lawyers Concern Group (CHRLCG) on the occasion of the 2017 Day of Endangered Lawyers (the Day).
The Day was initiated by Dutch lawyer Han Gaasbeeka together with a group of European lawyers in 2010 for the commemoration of lawyers in perils during the Spanish fascists in Madrid in 1977. Over the past years, it has become an occasion for the legal professional to express their solidarity to their counterparts at risk in different countries.
For 2017, it is dedicated to the lawyers in China, all those harassed, silenced, detained, and tortured as they defend human rights, especially for the disadvantaged, while performing their professional duties as lawyers.
We understand lawyers in 25 – 30 cities from around the world will organise seminars and conferences with protests launched in front of respective Chinese embassies. (*)
In Hong Kong, CHRLCG renders its support to the event via means of a media briefing. Apart from drawing public attention for the Day, we also intend to explore the prospect of the rights lawyers in China as the country develops itself into an economic and political giant but with judicial power check and balance. We would concurrently raise questions about where China is heading towards.
For the session, entitled “Will endangered lawyers endanger China’s future?” we are honoured to have the participation of the following guests speakers.
Moderator: Albert Ho, chairperson of CHRLCG, solicitor
· John Clancey, Asian Human Rights Commission, solicitor
· Wilson Leung, Progressive Lawyers Group, barrister
Attachments: An Open Letter to Chinese embassies and consulates
