Shon Hopwood, a law professor at Georgetown University Law Center, has been accused of domestic violence and, if found guilty, could face jail time. It’s not his first brush with the law.
Hopwood was convicted of robbing five banks in Nebraska and spent 10 years in federal prison, getting released in 2008. While in prison he helped other convicts with their appeals and he eventually wrote a book, Law Man: My Story of Robbing Banks, Winning Supreme Court Cases, and Finding Redemption.
After prison, he enrolled at University of Washington School of Law, in Seattle, and was awarded a full scholarship through the Gates Scholarship Program. After law school, he secured a federal clerkship and was hired by Georgetown University Law Center.
Currently there are two charges of assault of his wife, Anne Marie Hopwood, who is also a lawyer. In a court affidavit, she says her husband is violent, temperamental, and controlling. Shon Hopwood pleaded not guilty to the charges at the beginning of October and is being monitored by pretrial services while on release.
