The Centre for Disability Law and Policy was established in 2008 and is part of the School of Law, and the Institute for Lifecourse and Society at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Job Description:
The successful candidate will provide research support to the Principal Investigators on the project Closing the justice gap for women with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities in Asia Pacific , which is a six month project funded by UN Women. The project will design and deliver a legal needs survey to assess the access to justice needs of women with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities in 4 jurisdictions: Philippines, Nepal, Indonesia, and one Pacific Island country. The project will include co-production and adherence to the social model of disability. In all aspects of the project including survey design and delivery the research team will follow the social model and ensure that disabling social barriers are addressed. For example, the legal needs survey will include questions regarding the social barriers to legal services and the survey will be delivered in a manner that maximises accessibility.
The Postdoctoral Researcher recruited for this position will coordinate the project partners, draft the legal needs survey, undertake socio-legal research and analysis related to the barriers to access to justice in the relevant jurisdictions, coordinate the delivery of the survey to project partners and to participants, carry out an analysis of the findings of the legal needs survey, draft all relevant reports, and organise workshops and meetings.
The successful candidate will be also expected to contribute to the broader ongoing research mission of the Centres. This includes the development of grant proposals for related projects in the Centres.
Duties:
- Coordinate a legal needs surveys in the Philippines, Nepal, Indonesia, and one Pacific Island country, and develop an interim assessment report highlighting initial findings from the surveys.
- Assist with a mapping of justice frameworks within priority countries, for compliance with international human rights frameworks, including the CRPD and CEDAW.
- Contribute to one workshop/meeting to validate research findings.
- Conduct one research study based on the results of the legal needs survey, together with research and analysis of justice frameworks in priority countries, develop research and recommendations on closing the justice gap for women with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities.
- Contribute to a minimum of three workshops on the findings of the research.
- Develop a minimum of three knowledge products for the promotion of evidence-based advocacy on enhancing the justice journey for women with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities.
- Prepare a summary project.
Skills/Qualifications required:
Essential Requirements:
- PhD (or equivalent research experience) in law or policy related to disability/human rights.
- Primary degree, ideally a Masters degree, in law, social policy or an area relevant to disability or gender justice.
- Track record in an interdisciplinary research environment and strong disability law and policy experience is essential.
- Experience of conducting socio-legal research and analysis.
- Knowledge of the law and policy framework regarding disability, including Access to Justice.
- Excellent and proven ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary research team. Excellent and proven ability to work independently and use initiative.
- Proven ability to coordinate and support a global team.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills; be highly motivated and passionate about disability and human rights; and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills.
Desirable Requirements:
- Experience in conducting qualitative research with disabled people.
- Experience of writing funding proposals.
- Working level in a country language noted above
- Ability to present research findings to a wide range of audiences including disabled people, human rights bodies, health and social care professionals, etc.
- Ability to multi-task and work under pressure. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
NB: G rda clearance is a requirement for this post
Salary: 39,522 45,611 per annum (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply)
