Practising Law Institute (“PLI”) is seeking a Vice President, Print and Digital Publishing to lead its capable, Manhattan-based publishing team. SUMMARY The Vice President, Print and Digital Publishing oversees all print and digital publishing operations. This includes developing the strategic vision for the Publishing department, implementing forward-thinking new initiatives, budget and forecast development for the department, managing the acquisition of new titles, overseeing editorial and production staff, and working with authors to develop and publish content for PLI. In addition, the Vice President will collaborate on the marketing of publications, and oversee the distribution management of all PLI print publications and digital content. This position reports to the President, Practising Law Institute. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES • Senior oversight of the management of all publishing products (print and digital), including development of the strategic vision for new initiatives. • Manages relationships with current authors, and develops relationships with new authors in order to create additional relevant, high quality publications. Collaborates with the President, and the Vice President, Programs to generate new ideas for publications. • Oversees the creation of the annual budget for the department, and ensures annual goals are met. • Conducts research and analyzes the legal publishing marketplace to gain better understanding of purchasing patterns and opportunities. • Works in collaboration with the PLI Sales and Marketing groups in order to increase brand awareness, brand exposure, and revenue from PLI publications. • Ensures compliance with copyright law and negotiates contracts with authors of publishing products. • Working with the Director of Treatise Content, responsible for ensuring the timely and cost-effective creation of expertly authored and edited content. • Working with the Director of Publishing Technology and Production, responsible for ensuring the timely and cost-effective distribution of all print publications, as well as workflow to PLI’s online search product Discover PLUS. • Responsible for periodically investigating alternatives to current distribution relationships and vendors, and overseeing vendor contract management • Other duties, as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS • 10+ years of Publishing experience, ideally including experience in legal publishing and digital publishing • J.D. strongly preferred; Advanced degree required • Must possess an expert understanding of print and digital publishing from both the editorial perspective and business operations side • Must be able to demonstrate strong executive leadership in managing and motivating teams • Excellent problem-solving skills • Knowledge of RSuite, or a similar content management system, and XML workflows • Ability to investigate, understand, and manage the introduction of new software platforms for digital initiatives and publishing distribution, as needed PLI offers market-competitive compensation and a generous benefits package, including medical, dental and vision plans for employees and their families, PLI contributions to a retirement account, ample paid time off and holidays, summer Fridays, career development opportunities, and work-life balance initiatives.
