Position Overview Marquette University Eckstein Law Library seeks to recruit applicants for a Part Time Law Librarian – Reference position. Under the general direction of the Head of Reference, the candidate filling this position participates in the weekly reference schedule, providing reference and specialized research services to various types of law library patrons, and participates in additional law library reference or other activities as needed. The position staffs evening and/or weekend hours totaling approximately 8 to 16 hours per week during the regular academic session, with reduced or no hours during academic breaks, intersession, or periods during the summer, depending on the needs of the law library. A schedule will be determined based on the availability of the candidate and the needs of the law library.
Duties and Responsibilities • Participates in a weekly reference schedule consisting of evening and/or weekend hours. Occasional and irregular daytime, weekday hours are possible but rare.
• Provides reference services to patrons in person, over the phone, or by email.
• Provides a wide range of reference and specialized research assistance to law students, law faculty, the university community, the legal community, and members of the public.
• Refers patrons to legal research resources appropriate to their needs, provides appropriate instruction in the use of such resources, and provides information about alternative resources as necessary.
• Collaborates in the development, evaluation, and implementation of reference goals, policies, procedures, and services as needed.
• Creates, revises, and updates research guides, bibliographies, and other law library publications and web content as needed.
• May participate in or complete other projects and activities that support reference, research, or instructional needs, such as, but not limited to, special collection development and maintenance projects or research instruction sessions or presentations.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Head of Reference or the Director of the Law Library.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities • Juris Doctorate and enrollment in or graduation from an ALA-accredited master’s degree program in library science
or Master’s Degree in Library Science combined with at least five years of meaningful experience in a legal/law library position.
• Knowledge of legal bibliography and legal research techniques in multiple formats.
• Demonstrated knowledge of online legal research systems (e.g., Bloomberg Law, BNA, CCH, Fastcase, HeinOnline, Lexis Advance, and Westlaw) as well as web-based legal resources and print legal research materials.
• Strong service orientation and ability to work with a diverse patron population.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
• Flexibility and the ability to work both independently and cooperatively as part of a team.
• Proficiency using standard MS Office applications.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities • Previous experience in law library reference or library reference.
• Previous experience teaching legal research, technology, or information literacy sessions.
