The University of Minnesota Law Library seeks highly motivated applicants for the position of Faculty Research Librarian. This new position works closely with the Associate Director for Research Services and Collection Development in support of the Library’s faculty services. The position provides significant opportunities for growth and increased responsibility as the successful candidate gains experience.

The Law Library is an integral part of the University of Minnesota Law School, which consistently ranks among the top law schools in the nation. The Library serves a highly productive and engaged Law faculty and an exceptional student body, and supports a wide array of legal and interdisciplinary scholarly research interests. Responsibilities

Primary areas of responsibility include providing expert research support to Law School faculty; participating in the hiring and training of the Law Library’s student research assistants; providing instruction and consultation services for faculty members’ research assistants; participating in the design and implementation of new service initiatives for faculty; tracking faculty scholarship and evolving research interests; and participating in the intellectual life of the Law School by regularly attending lectures, workshops, and other events.

The Faculty Research Librarian is a member of the Law Library’s reference team, providing general reference and research assistance to all Library patrons, and participating in the reference schedule rotation. In consultation with the Associate Director for Research Services and Collection Development, the position serves as liaison to the Law School’s Minnesota Law Review. The Faculty Research Librarian participates in collection development and may be assigned other responsibilities, including legal research instruction upon faculty request.

The Faculty Research Librarian represents the Law Library on campus, regional, and national levels, engages in research and scholarship relevant to law librarianship, legal education, or substantive legal subjects, and participates in professional service activities.

Required Qualifications

  • J.D. from an A.B.A. accredited law school
  • M.L.S. from an A.L.A. accredited graduate school
  • Minimum of two years of library reference experience in a legal environment
  • Evidence of exceptional research competency, including ability to analyze research requests effectively, conduct expert legal and interdisciplinary research, synthesize research results, and deliver a high quality, comprehensive final product
  • Evidence of strong project management skills
  • Evidence of excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Evidence of exceptional service philosophy
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, as well as work collaboratively
  • Evidence of ability to contribute actively to the law library profession, the legal profession, and legal education through scholarly publications and participation in professional activities

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years of full-time professional reference experience in a research-oriented academic law library providing in-depth legal research support for law school faculty, and reference and research assistance to law school students strongly preferred
