The University of California, Irvine School of Law seeks a creative, enthusiastic, and innovative law librarian to serve as Research Law Librarian for Foreign, Comparative, and International Law. Reporting to the Associate Law Librarian for Public Services, the Research Law Librarian for Foreign, Comparative, and International Law takes primary responsibility for designing and developing the Library’s expanding foreign, international, and comparative law programs and services, and supports the research needs of law faculty, students, and staff in this area. He/she also works closely with the Research Law Librarian for Faculty Services in the Library’s faculty services program, which includes completing research projects, administering efforts to highlight faculty scholarship, and creating other opportunities to serve and partner with the Law Faculty. Responsibilities include:
• Serves as the primary contact for research requests to support foreign, international, and comparative law scholarship and teaching needs, and coordinates with members of the Research Services team to divide research requests when necessary.
• Provides significant research assistance to all faculty members when needed. Serves as the primary backup to the Research Law Librarian for Faculty Services, and manages all faculty research workflow when necessary.
• Develops programs and services necessary to meet the needs of the law school’s growing foreign and international programs, including but not limited to Jessup International Law Moot Court, the Center on Globalization, Law and Society, the US-China Institute, an LLM program currently under development, and the University of California Irvine Journal of International, Transnational, and Comparative Law (ILJ).
• Serves as a member of the Law Library’s Research Services department, providing excellent and responsive general information and legal research services through regular shifts at the Reference Desk, including some evenings and weekends.
• Participates in the Law Library’s collection development efforts, including selection, assessment and management of foreign, comparative, and international law resources.
• Participates in developing and teaching the first-year legal research course, a one credit, mandatory course.
• Collaborates with all librarians in the Research Services department to design, develop, and maintain the research webpages on the Law Library website, particularly the foreign, comparative, and international law resources and LibGuides.
• Participates actively and effectively on Law Library committees, task forces, and project teams as appropriate.
• Represents the Law Library on various Law School, campus-wide, and Library System committees and at various meetings and other functions, as appropriate.
• Participates in and contributes to the profession through professional activities outside the Law Library, including university and public service, and/or research and other creative activity. These activities normally relate to and enhance performance of the primary position responsibilities.
• Develops and maintains awareness of current developments in the fields of law, library science, and legal research to enhance performance of primary position responsibilities.
• Other responsibilities as assigned.
To Apply:
Applicants must hold a J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited institution. Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of relevant advanced degree and library experience is required. Applicants are required to have at least two years of experience in academic law libraries, providing research and other relevant library services to law faculty.
Other requirements include experience and skill in providing legal research and reference services; experience in providing legal research training sessions to law students; extensive knowledge of legal bibliography and legal research techniques in multiple formats; and demonstrated interpersonal and oral written communication skills.
