The J. Michael Goodson Law Library invites applications for the position of Reference Librarian.  Reference Librarians at Duke work as a team of skilled and creative law-trained professionals who have primary responsibility to provide extensive reference and research services in a technologically advanced environment serving a sophisticated and research-oriented faculty and student body.

Duke Law has launched an ambitious initiative to prepare our students for leadership roles in law and technology in the practice of law . This position will work with other Librarians and Academic Technologies staff,  in  program development and creation of learning opportunities across the law school.

 Core Responsibilities: 

  1. provide extensive reference and research services to Duke Law faculty, students, staff and the Duke University community;
  2. work actively with assigned liaison faculty to support teaching and scholarship and monitor research interests;
  3. teach first-year legal research in an integrated legal research and writing curriculum, upper level courses on advanced legal research topics, and participate in S. legal research instruction program for international LL.M.s;
  4. develop instruction and services to support Duke Law School programs in law and technology
  5. provide instruction and consultation services for student research assistants, student journal editors, and clinical programs;
  6. create and update research guides and other instructional and promotional materials in various formats
  7. participate in collection development

 All Duke Librarians are eligible for continuing appointment and promotion under the University’s ranking system.  Reference Librarians are non-tenure track members of the Law School faculty at the rank of Lecturing Fellow. Library staff are encouraged and supported in seeking opportunities for professional growth and educational involvement.

Qualifications and Experience:

Applications from both entry level and experienced candidates welcome

Required: MLS and JD degrees from accredited institutions

Preferred: teaching experience, law practice experience, or law library reference experience

 The successful candidate will also have- Knowledge and ability with legal research sources and techniques, and proficiency in using and learning databases and other research tools;
-Ability to work effectively and creatively with an active, research-oriented faculty in varied settings
-Knowledge of current information technologies and interest in new and emerging technologies for law practice;
-Demonstrated interest or experience in teaching;
-Commitment to excellent service;
-Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
-Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills;
-Commitment to continuous improvement and innovation
-Self-initiative and ability to work in a collegial environment with high performance expectations
-Willingness to work some evening and weekend hours
