Salary Range: Associate Librarian: $53,116 – $59,089 per annum, based upon qualifications

Start Date: Anticipated January 15, 2017

This is a 100% time, two-year (24-month) term contract position.

Overview:

The Robbins Collection at the University of California School of Law (Berkeley Law) is seeking a manuscript cataloger whose primary responsibility will be to prepare item-level catalog records of medieval and early modern (i.e., pre-1800) manuscript codices, documents, and fragments. This is a full-time temporary appointment for two years. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of medieval and early modern manuscript books and documents, experience with cataloging single-item manuscripts, advanced knowledge of Latin, knowledge of other European languages, familiarity with descriptive standards such as AACR2 and/or RDA, DACS, AMREMM and the DCRM suite, and strong communication skills.

location at Berkeley Law greatly enhances the educational aspect of its mission, providing unique educational opportunities for students interested in comparative and historical approaches to law. The Collection houses more than 340,000 titles on such topics as civil law, comparative law, jurisprudence, legal history, and religious law encompassing the canon law of the Roman and Greek churches, Jewish law and Islamic law. The Collection’s holdings include more than 300 manuscript books, more than 300 incunables, more than 150 manuscript documents and fragments, electronic resources for historical legal research, and microfilms of the Canon and Roman law manuscripts in the Vatican Library. Primary Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Reference Librarian of the Robbins Collection, and in consultation with a team of UC Berkeley cataloging professionals, the manuscript cataloger has responsibility for

original, item-level cataloging of manuscript codices, documents and fragments in Latin and various modern European languages. Prepares full descriptive MARC 21 catalog records and updates existing records, using AMREMM and DCRM. Assigns subject headings and form/genre terms to new and existing manuscript records according to national standards and local practice. Performs authority control and may work with a team of UC Berkeley catalogers to establish and revise name headings in the LC/NACO Authority File according to NACO policies. Works with Robbins staff to update online resource for manuscript research, which is currently in development.

Minimum Qualifications Required (at time of application):

* Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent degree with a specialization in archival studies.

Additional Qualifications (by start date):

  • 2-4 years of experience working as a manuscript librarian or archivist, with emphasis on cataloging.
  • Demonstrated experience in MARC 21 cataloging, including experience with AACR2 and/or RDA, DACS, AMREMM, or the DCRM suite.
  • Reading knowledge of Latin and at least one European language other than English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to meet a high standard of quality of work independently and expeditiously.
  • Demonstrated experience working with online cataloging systems, especially OCLC Connexion.
  • Demonstrated experience with applying Library of Congress Subject Headings.
  • Knowledge of paleography.
  • Experience working in an Integrated Library System environment, especially Innovative Interfaces Inc. Sierra.
  • Advanced degree in law or the humanities (preferably in Medieval or Early Modern Studies).
  • Experience in the creation of name authority records, preferably for contribution to the Library of Congress as part of the NACO program.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of arrangement and description of archival collections.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and ensure regular workflows.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as initiative and flexibility.

UC professional librarians are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council – American Federation of Teachers (UCAFT). This position is in the bargaining unit.
