Pet owner in France faced large fine and prison sentence over ‘illegal’ cat

A pet owner in southern France recently faced a potential €300,000 fine and two years in prison after authorities discovered he was keeping an “illegal” rescue cat that had entered the country without proper documentation.
  • The Owner:
Mr. Puech who adopted a cat named  Tigrou through a rescue association in 2022.
  • The Offense: He received a letter from the local prefecture stating he was the owner of an illegally imported animal. Under French law, importing animals outside of strict health and customs regulations can carry severe criminal penalties.
  • Resolution: Authorities gave
Mr. Puech 48 hours to prove he had acted in good faith. By providing years of veterinary bills and documentation from the original foster parent, he proved he was unaware of the cat’s illegal status.
  • Outcome: Officials accepted his explanation, allowing the cat’s status to be regularized. The legal proceedings were dropped a week later, and Tigrou was permitted to stay with his owner.
