Lawyers play a vital role in protecting citizens’ rights and upholding the rule of law. Yet legal practitioners in Pakistan increasingly face threats while performing their professional duties.
A recent incident in Chiniot involved Advocate Muhammad Nadeem Hameed, who was allegedly assaulted after accepting a case against an influential individual. According to the FIR, armed men entered his office, assaulted him, and later confined and robbed him before fleeing when police arrived. Although an FIR has been registered, the main suspects reportedly remain at large.
Such attacks deserve unequivocal condemnation. Violence against lawyers undermines public confidence in the justice system and threatens citizens’ access to legal representation. The authorities must ensure a prompt investigation, arrest those responsible, and prosecute them in accordance with the law. Where appropriate, relevant enhanced penal provisions should also be considered. Protecting legal professionals is essential to safeguarding the rule of law.
