Our small engineering team builds fast-loading, usable, reliable applications that bring American law to people from all walks of life – lawyers, engineers, construction workers, students, disability advocates, bankers, farmers, and many, many more. We make full use of cutting-edge NLP, machine-learning, and cloud-computing technologies to support our mission.

What you will do:

Reporting to the Managing Director of the Legal Information Institute (LII) at Cornell Law School, the Original Content Collections Manager manages all collections of original content on the LII website (http://www.law.cornell.edu) and the people who create that content. The LII website currently comprises nearly half a million pages and welcomes more than 30 million unique visitors each year. It contains significant collections of original content generated by students, volunteers, and other collaborators that we wish to expand, improve, and keep current, primarily through increasing our capacity to recruit and manage both paid students and a network of volunteers.

The Original Content Collections Manager is responsible for the following:

  • Developing and deploying all original content on the site, including student-authored LII publications, crowdsourced materials, and content developed for narrow topical areas under sponsorship agreements.
  • Coordinating content development with a broad array of collaborators.
  • Managing project scope, costs, and overall production for all LII content creation, enhancement, and maintenance.
  • Enhancing linkage of original content to primary law resources on the LII website and elsewhere.
  • Overseeing an ongoing program of maintenance and editorial improvement that is responsive to site needs, user needs, and audience feedback.
  • Evolving content development policy, and assigning personnel and resources as needed to meet evolving needs.
  • Overseeing quality control of all LII-created content, including responding to user feedback.
  • Recruiting and supervising significant numbers of student workers.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with a large and globally-distributed volunteer network of Law School alumni, practicing attorneys, academics, government officials, law librarians, and businesspeople.

The position has no responsibility for the creation and distribution of marketing collateral, but may be asked to assist by, for example, identifying substantive original content for distribution via fundraising newsletters or social media.

This gift-funded position is for a two-year term. Reappointment may be possible based on performance and funding availability.

What we need:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of relevant experience in library science, civics education, information science, law, or related fields or equivalent combination.
  • Collections management, project management, or other supervisory experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of collaborators both inside and outside of Cornell Law School.
  • Proven analytic skills in budgeting, requirements preparation, and resource estimation, and for ensuring that completed projects meet the requirements of all stakeholders.
  • Proven skills in consensus-building, conflict management and resolution, and leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and manage relationships, and recruit and manage student employees, volunteers, and collaborators.

We’d prefer experience in structuring diffuse content collections, especially online; gathering and summarizing information for a broad audience; publishing or otherwise disseminating knowledge to the public, especially on specialized topics often considered the exclusive purview of “experts”; and managing plain-language or general interest publications, especially on legal or law-related topics. Ability to use Web analytics to guide evolving collection and content development policies and in managing web-based content-creation; and to develop collaborations with professionals from academia, government, and law. Interest in the democratization of information into the public domain.

During the COVID restrictions this position will primarily work remotely. During the training phase there may be times when certain activities will take place on campus, observing all University protocols and guidelines, but this would be limited in nature until such time that the remote work restrictions are lifted.
