OpenAI Seeks Trademark Registration for GPT-5

Running hot on patent alerts today is this

OpenAI has applied for trademark registration of “GPT-5” as per the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) records. The registration suggests that GPT-5 will offer features like text generation, natural language understanding, speech transcription, translation, and analysis.

Earlier this year, experts had mentioned that there were requests within the tech community, led by Elon Musk, to halt research and development on GPT-5. However, OpenAI had clarified in June that they had not yet started training GPT-5. This casts uncertainty on whether training has commenced in the past two months. It is plausible that the trademark registration is merely a precautionary measure by OpenAI.
