An online programme leading to the award of a Master of Laws in Chinese Business Law by the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) is available for global enrollment. Holders of a Master’s degree recognized by the University may complete the programme within 12 months.
Commencing in April this year, the programme is the first of its kind presented in English. It was designed to cater for the needs of business professionals engaged in Chinese-foreign joint ventures, and managers and proprietors of non-government organizations as well as small and medium-sized enterprises.
The programme covers a broad range of topics, such as Chinese civil law, contract law, intellectual property protection law and financial law, providing students with fundamental knowledge of the legal frameworks underpinning commercial operations within and outside China. It emphasizes practical applications of Chinese business law from cross-border and comparative perspectives. A large number of case studies will be used for discussion to help students better understand the actual business environment in mainland China.
Without the limitations of geographical boundaries, the programme capitalises on the flexibility of e-learning and is particularly suitable for people on the move and who want to learn at their own pace. There will be online course materials, synchronized presentations/tutorials, video-taped seminars, an e-library and reference resources from the University’s online learning platform. Students can also attend real-time online lectures and take part in discussion forums and video-conferencing to share their learning experiences, enjoying the people interaction typical of face-to-face study.
The OUHK launched the Chinese version of the programme in 2007 and started to offer the English version last year.
"We now have over 120 students studying the programme and among them, about one-fourth are non-local students mainly from mainland China, Taiwan, Canada, USA and Europe," said Dr Chung Siu-leung, Associate Professor of the University’s Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration. "A group of high-profile executives like CEOs, managing directors, general managers and proprietors have enrolled in the programme. We have received very positive comments from students and they also found the programme contents useful to their jobs," he added.
Presented by the University’s Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration, the programme has been supported by senior members of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Gallant Y. T. Ho & Co., Solicitors & Notaries. It has also been recognized by the Law Society of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants for inclusion in the Society’s Continuous Professional Development Scheme (CPD Scheme).
Applicants with a recognized Bachelor’s degree in law, business administration or related fields or equivalent academic qualifications are required to obtain 60 credits from the compulsory and elective courses. Holders of a recognized Master’s degree in related fields are only required to obtain 40 credits from the compulsory courses. The total tuition fee ranges from HK$53,000 (US$6,800) to HK$79,500 (US$10,200).
Students may also obtain 20 credits from the required courses to get the Postgraduate Certificate in Chinese Business Law before they proceed to complete the Master programme. They may also study for a single course for areas which they are particularly interested in.
