Position Summary
The Director of Law Library & Instructional Technology is responsible for the administration of the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) School of Law Louis L. Biro Law Library and educational technology unit. The Director of Law Library & Instructional Technology is part of the law school’s senior leadership team and provides strategic and operational direction for the law school’s information resources, services, and policies. Though primarily responsible to the Dean of UIC Law, the Director of Law Library & Instructional Technology has a joint report to UIC’s University Librarian and Dean of Libraries under a memorandum of understanding between the law school and the UIC university libraries. Duties & Responsibilities (Open-Rank or Clinical Professor – 51%)
- Teach law students in the classroom or other settings at the J.D. and master’s levels.
- Regularly produce high-quality scholarship
- Engage in internal and external service activities, including attending law school and University meetings, serving on law school and University committees, participating in scholarly organizations or organizations related to the legal profession, librarianship, or information science, such as ALA and AALL and its chapters, delivering presentations, and providing other services to the academy, community, or legal profession.
- Collaborate with other faculty and staff to establish a strong learning environment.
Duties & Responsibilities (Director of Library & Instructional Technology – 49%)
- Administer the budgets, personnel, services, and strategic priorities of the Louis L. Biro Law Library and educational technology unit.
- Serve as the law school’s liaison with the leadership of UIC Libraries and manage the law library’s role in integrating and providing library resources and services across UIC campuses.
- Ensure that the law library’s collection and resources are sufficient to meet the primary goal of supporting the teaching and research needs of the law school’s faculty, staff and students.
- Manage the law library’s compliance with the accreditation standards of the American Bar Association and the Association of American Law Schools and support the library’s relations with the law school, library consortia, and professional organizations.
- Support the law school’s existing online courses, new course development, and other curricular and co-curricular online initiatives through the educational technology unit.
- Work with administrators and departments across the law school on initiatives involving the law library and distance/online education resources and appropriate faculty committees on library and instructional technology-related support for academic matters.
- Supervise the middle managers of the Louis L. Biro Law Library and educational technology department.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications (General)
- J.D. degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association
- Demonstrated progressive experience working in an academic law library
- Demonstrated experience supervising staff
- Demonstrated experience with online curricula development
- Demonstrated ability to handle situations with sound judgement, discretion, and confidentiality
Minimum Qualifications (For Open-Rank Classification)
In addition to the general minimum requirements listed above, candidates seeking an open rank classification should have the following:
- Record of teaching excellence or demonstrated potential to become an excellent teacher.
- Record of high-quality scholarship or demonstrated potential to produce high-quality scholarship.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor students.
Minimum Qualifications (for any classification)
In addition to the general minimum requirements listed above, candidates seeking any classification should have the following:
- Record of teaching.
- Record of scholarship engagement.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor students.
The salary range is $146,700 to $190,000.
