Tasmania facing a `critical’ lawyer shortage
THE Law Society of Tasmania says the State is facing a critical shortage of lawyers in regional and rural areas and is seeking incentives to attract new practitioners.
An nation-wide survey by the Law Council of Australia found that in Tasmania, one third of practitioners in regional areas will leave the profession over the next five years.
The survey found lawyers in rural, regional and remote Australia had revealed concerns about future access to legal services because of the high number of lawyers leaving regional areas and the difficulties attracting young lawyers to replace them.
The most common reasons for leaving were work life balance, better remuneration and to move to the city for lifestyle reasons.
Over one third of lawyers who run law firms said they did not have enough lawyers in their practices to service their current client base, nor meet the needs of their local community.
