Obituary: Law Librarian Peter Garland

GARLAND, Peter Joseph, age 86, of Sewanee, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2020, at his home. He was a graduate of the Sewanee Military Academy, University of the South, Emory University School of Law and George Peabody College. He served in the United States Air Force where he achieved the rank of Second Lieutenant before being honorably discharged in June 1956. As a civilian he served for 30 years as a law librarian and lecturer-in-law at Vanderbilt University School of Law. He was one of the founders and supporters of the Garland-Govan Memorial Scholarship Fund at The University of the South, a tuition scholarship for students residing in the local area. He was preceded in death by his father, Peter J. Garland and his mother, Katie F. Garland. He will be remembered by his friends and neighbors for his smile, his keen sense of humor and his passion for sports, particularly baseball. Burial will be in the University Cemetery, Sewanee, Tennessee. The graveside service was held on Friday, June 19, 2020, at 11 a.m. It was Mr. Garland’s wish that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Garland-Govan Memorial Scholarship Fund at The University of the South, Sewanee. Online condolences may be made to www.watsonnorth.com.
