Oakwood lawyer sentenced for voyeurism, pics of nude minor

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — An Oakwood lawyer will spend the next 10 years behind bars after pleading guilty Monday to voyeurism and taking pictures and videos of a nude minor.

Matthew Currie had initially pleaded not guilty to 91 counts related to voyeurism, unlawful use of a computer, and illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, but changed his plea on April 29 to accept 76 counts.

Victims were not present in the Montgomery County courtroom, but their statements were read.

Currie, however, had a lot of supporters in the room to speak on his behalf, from family members to friends from law school to professional colleagues. They said that the person who committed these crimes was not the person they knew.

Currie’s family believes he has a rare neurological disease called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. The condition, which has no cure, affects balance, speech, and facial and eye movements.

Many people from Currie’s life said they do not want to diminish his actions but wanted the court to recognize the effect of the illness on his behavior.

Montgomery County Judge Mary Wiseman said that while she understood Currie’s professional and personal accomplishments before his illness, they do not excuse his actions.

After serving his time behind bars, Currie will have five years of post-release control supervision and must register as a sex offender for 25 years.
