The storied Ivy League haunt in Manhattan shut down during the pandemic, but buyout specialist Leonard Levie wants to revive it in a new location.
The Princeton Club of New York, a storied midtown Ivy League establishment that shut down during the pandemic, has reappeared on the scene — in intellectual property circles, at least.
An offshoot of buyout firm American Industrial Acquisition Corp. has applied for trademarks on “Princeton Club of New York” and a “PCNY” logo superimposed on Princeton University’s well-known shield and chevron.
The entity, AIAC Puerto Rico Holdings LLC, is run by AIAC’s longtime chairman, Leonard Levie, who wants to revive the club in a new location, according to a spokeswoman. But his applications have drawn an objection from Princeton University, which has vowed to protect its trademarked orange-and-black shield. Also lurking is the company that controls the building and intends to sell it.
Levie’s trademark application, as written, could let him put the club’s name on everything from a golf course to a fast-food restaurant, even products like caviar and wine. But his plans only involve finding a new home for the club, spokeswoman Isabel Carro Toro said.
