The Eastern Bar Forum (EBF) strongly condemns the recent attack on the person and subsequent unlawful detention of Chinaka Chigozie Esq by the police at Area Command, Owerri on the order of the Area Commander, David Ogenye in the line of carrying out his professional duties last September. This incident is a clear violation of the fundamental rights of Mr. Chigozie and an unacceptable affront to the legal profession as a whole.
The EBF is deeply concerned about the increasing cases of harassment and assault against lawyers who are simply carrying out their professional duties. Lawyers play a crucial role in upholding justice and the rule of law, and any attack on them undermines the integrity of our legal system.
According to reports received, Mr. Chigozie was assaulted by police officers when he visited the Command to secure the freedom of his Client, one Wisdom Mmaduka, who has been detained by the command since June, 2023 on the grounds of breach of promise to marry. This act of violence not only violates his right to practice law without fear or intimidation but also undermines the trust and confidence that citizens should have in law enforcement agencies.
The EBF calls on the relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate this incident and ensure that those responsible for the attack are held accountable for their actions. It is imperative that justice is served, and measures are put in place to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
We urge the Nigerian Police Force to prioritize training programs for its officers on the rights and privileges of legal practitioners. It is essential that law enforcement agencies understand and respect the role of lawyers in society, as well as their duty to protect and uphold the rights of citizens.
The EBF also calls on all lawyers practicing within our jurisdiction to remain steadfast in their commitment to justice and not be deterred by such acts of intimidation. We stand in solidarity with Mr. Chigozie and assure him of our unwavering support during this ordeal.
