White & Case has hired a new partner to lead its China mergers and acquisitions practice in Shanghai.
It’s being reported that Alex Zhang has joined theWhite & Case from the? Jones Day’ Shanghai office, where he was a partner.

As well as leading White & Case’s China corporate practice, he also replaces partner John Leary as office head. Leary will continue to practice at the firm as a corporate partner.
The hire follows that of Hong Kong-based corporate partner Virginia Tam, who also moved to White & Case from Jones Day in July.
Zhang has more than two decades’ experience advising both domestic and international clients on China-related mergers and acquisitions. At Jones Day, he advised Shanghai private equity firm BioVeda China Fund in the sale of its majority interests in CITIC Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. and China Health System Ltd. to Shanghai Pharmaceutical Holding Co. Ltd. earlier this year. In 2009, he was adviser to MOBI Development Co. Ltd., a Chinese manufacturer of telecommunications equipment, on a $76 million initial public offering in Hong Kong.
Before joining Jones Day in 2004, Zhang was a corporate partner in Dorsey & Whitney’s Shanghai office and co-chair of the firm’s Asia practice group. He joined Dorsey in 1989 and was made partner in 1994.
Zhang joins White & Case’s six-lawyer Shanghai office as its second partner. The firm also has offices in Beijing and Hong Kong, which have 29 and 23 lawyers, respectively.
