The film “Transcending Fear” shows the life story of the Christian lawyer Gao Zhisheng, who was named “Honorary Lawyer” by the Chinese Ministry of Justice in 2001. When he began to take over cases of politically persecuted prisoners because of their refusing to give up their believes, pressure from the Chinese Communist Party turned against him. Gao was arrested several times without just cause, held captive without contact with the outside world and severely tortured. Nevertheless, he maintained his Christian values and continued to stand by the powerless. He has been considered abducted since 2017.

Born in a cave with only stars to tell time, Gao Zhisheng overcomes incredible odds to become one of China’s top attorneys. The people call him “the Conscience of China.” But then, in the eyes of the Communist Party, he goes too far.
In 2008, Gao Zhisheng was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. He was awarded inter alia the Courages Advocacy Abroad by the American Board of Trial Advocates in 2007.
