National Pro Bono Day In Australia

Wonderful idea so thought we’d tell you about it ….

Today is national Pro Bono Day in Australia.

They write on their website

National Pro Bono Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the pro bono work done by the legal and other professions. We encourage you to see it as an opportunity to make announcements about new initiatives, report on work done or if you are the recipient of pro bono services to simply thank those that provide them.

This is whatt they say about themselves

About Us

The Centre opened its doors at UNSW in August 2002.  Its establishment was recommended by the National Pro Bono Task Force to the Commonwealth Attorney-General in its report dated 14 June 2001. The Centre is incorporated as a company limited by guarantee with a Board and Advisory Council.

The Centre is an independent, non profit organisation that aims to:
encourage pro bono legal services,
support lawyers and law firms to make it easier for them to provide high quality pro bono legal services, and
work with the profession and the community sector to match services with the clients and groups most in need of assistance.

The Centre receives financial assistance from the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department, each of the States and Territories, through their Attorney-General’s Departments, and the Faculty of Law at the University of New South Wales.

The Centre promotes and supports pro bono through its independent role as advocate, broker, coordinator, researcher and resource provider.  Individual case referrals are directed to pro bono clearing houses and schemes which exist in many States of Australia.

Details of the Centre’s publications and current activities are available on this site.

The Centre consults widely with the legal profession, community sector, and other relevant people. After extensive consultation, the Centre’s Strategic Plan for 2005–2009 was finalised in September 2005 and is being reviewed in 2008.
