A serious attack on a Muslim woman lawyer in Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi has raised sharp questions about safety, justice, and the cost of speaking against corruption at the village level.
Advocate Firdous Jahan has alleged that she and her family were attacked by the husband of a village head and his associates after she filed official complaints exposing corruption. She says the assault was meant as punishment for taking legal action.
The incident took place in broad daylight as Firdous Jahan was travelling with her family in a car on Wednesday. According to her complaint, the village head’s husband, Naseem, along with several men, surrounded the vehicle, damaged it, and attacked those inside.
“This was not a personal dispute,” Firdous Jahan said. “I complained about corruption through legal channels. The allegations were checked and found true. After that, the village head’s financial powers were taken away. This attack was a revenge.”
She said the notice and inquiry had already led to official action against the village head, Nasim, after departments confirmed wrongdoing. “Instead of accepting the law, they chose violence,” she added.
A video of the attack, now widely shared on social media, shows men using sticks and iron rods to break the car windows. One person is dragged out and beaten by five to seven attackers, while two women are seen trying to shield the victim. Broken glass, a damaged car body, and terrified voices are clearly visible.
“They were openly threatening us,” Firdous Jahan alleged. “They were saying, ‘This is what happens when you complain.’ They wanted to scare me into silence.”
Local people said the attack caused panic in the area. “If a lawyer is not safe after following the law, what hope is there for ordinary people?” one resident asked.
