How we LEAD:
The Coordinator, Music Sampling is part of our Sampling Team under Business and Legal Affairs and supports the Director of Music Sampling. The Music Sampling Team touches almost every aspect of publishing; from listening to brand new songs, to licensing and tracking the income. The Coordinator, Music Sampling will liaise with many departments at UMPG, including Business Affairs, Copyright, Creative, Finance, Income Tracking, and Royalties as well as UMPG’s foreign offices and the major record labels. This job requires, in equal parts, a strong musical ear as well as an administrative skillset to manage and organize a large portfolio of matters at any given time. This position can grow for the right candidate. The ideal candidate has a passion for music and the business behind the music.
How you’ll CREATE:
- Assist with the approval process for the licensing of new songs with samples and interpolations for independent requestors
- Listen and evaluate the musical character and nature of interpolations, and propose appropriate deal structures
- Research rightsholder and clearance information
- Send official approval and denial emails, including status updates
- Handle adaptation and translation requests, including arrangements, medleys, and mashups
- Track request progress using internal schedules and data tracking systems
- Perform administrative duties, including maintaining records for requests and records for archival department use
- Field inquiries both internally and externally

- Strong typing and computer skills, including Word, Excel, Windows software, and Outlook
- Musical background or ear training of some kind (musically trained, proficient musician, experience writing, or producing)
- Experience with clearing samples, infringements, or negotiating songwriter splits is helpful but not required
- 2-3 years Music Industry experience is a plus (preferably in A&R Admin, copyright, sampling, or music publishing)
- High school equivalent or higher required
- College degree in Music Business, Music Production, or Songwriting preferred
