Miami Law Launches Online Master of Legal Studies Degree

Unlike other degree programs that become useful only upon completion, with the online Master of Legal Studies program, participants can apply today’s classroom learning at the office tomorrow.

Explicitly designed for non-lawyer professionals and those who work every day in legal compliance, risk management, and in and around the law or lawyers, the 30-credit Master of Legal Studies online program blends the flexibility of a part-time, asynchronous learning experience with the highest caliber of academics guided by expert, law faculty.

“We are thrilled to launch a rigorous and engaging online MLS degree program in the fall of 2024,” said David Yellen, dean and M. Minnette Massey Professor of Law. “In the highly regulated world in which we live, professionals working in law-related fields will benefit from its cutting-edge curriculum delivered by expert faculty. We are excited to welcome new MLS students to the Miami Law community.”

The foundational “core” courses in the Master of Legal Studies online program equip the participants to analyze and communicate about the laws and regulations governing each industry. Core courses include Foundations in U.S. Law and Regulation, Legal Research and Writing, and Analysis Skills, and Corporate Compliance & Enterprise Risk Management. The curriculum concludes with a master’s capstone course, performed under the guidance of a program faculty member.

MLS online faculty are recognized experts in their fields. They are actively engaged with the fast-paced and ever-evolving changes in the law and deal with the same issues facing the industry currently. They are rigorously trained to teach relevant law courses, developed with an in-house design team in an asynchronous, interactive environment.

Small classes allow for lasting professional relationships with faculty and abundant opportunities to engage with them inside the virtual classroom and outside of it.

Unlike other online MLS programs, participants become part of the University of Miami School of Law community and have access to a world of benefits—from a virtual student lounge to engage with class peers to the Dean’s virtual office hours to Miami Law’s global 23,000+ alumni network, which opens a wealth of opportunities. Participants are invited to law events at the ‘U’ and can join law affinity groups.

The program also offers a virtual career office specifically for Miami Law MLS students. It includes resumé review, access to law-specific employment databases, and one-on-one career advising to position participants for success and fuel their career growth.
