Members of the Baja California lawyers’ union demonstrated peacefully in the building Executive power in Mexicali, demanding greater security and clarification of the murders of 18 lawyers registered during the current state administration.
David Jesús Rincón Rey, state president of the Federation of Bar Associations, Bars and Associations of Baja California (FEDABO), pointed out that the situation keeps the union on alert, particularly because some of the victims’ families have received new threats.
“There are 18 lawyers murdered so far in this administration and, in fact, there are currently three families of those 18 murdered lawyers who have been threatened”, he stated King Corner, who added that this situation was exposed directly to the authorities during the meeting.
The leader acknowledged that there is disagreement among lawyers due to the lack of results in the investigations. According to the information provided by PHAEDABUS, so far only three detainees related to two of the cases have been registered, so 16 files remain unresolved.
“To date we know that there are three detainees in two cases in particular, which means that 16 cases have not been resolved”, he pointed out.
King Corner he maintained that homicides do not correspond exclusively to a certain legal specialty, since among the victims are lawyers dedicated to labor, tax, civil and criminal law. For this reason, he ruled out that there is a particularly vulnerable branch of law.
The president of PHAEDABUS he emphasized that the union’s demand is not to receive exclusive security, but to guarantee security for the entire population.
“The main requirement is that there be security in the State; If there is insecurity in the State, it is not just the lawyers who are insecure, the taquero, the engineer, are insecure, we are all insecure”, expressed.
After the demonstration, the lawyers entered a meeting with representatives of the Legal Counsel, the Ministry of Public Security, the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) and the General Secretariat of Government, with those who addressed the protection measures for the union and the monitoring of investigations.
Although he recognized some progress, King Corner he noted that the lawyers were not completely satisfied with the meeting. “We will never be satisfied with any meeting, that is the truth; however, there is progress, we cannot deny that”, he stated.
