ALB has conducted an interview with Gavin Bell the managing partner at Australian law firm, Freehills…
In the interview he discusses the concept of the "Big Six" Australian law firms, partner turnover at the firm, Freehills relationships with other firms and much more.
Interview extract:
Freehills has a CEO and two other managing partners who are responsible for people and clients respectively. "That’s a reflection of the fact that there are two basic stakeholders in the firm – people and clients," says Bell. The ‘managing partners’ concept has since been adopted by other firms. "I suppose you might call them executive partners, to use the parlance of the other firms," says Bell. He has had plenty of time to think about optimal leadership structure, having been with Freehills for 26 years. He attained partnership in 1988, but perhaps the desire to become a leader was born some time before that – he spent his university years employed part-time at McDonald’s, working his way up to a store manager position. "McDonald’s is a great experience," Bell says. "It’s good training and you learn to develop a sense of responsibility and leadership."
