Massachusetts: SJC names new reporter of decisions

The Supreme Judicial Court has appointed a successor to Reporter of Decisions Brian H. Redmond ahead of his January retirement.

Madchen “Maddie” S. Makara’s appointment as the 19th reporter of decisions will be effective on Jan. 28.

Makara joined the Reporter’s Office in February 2012 as a legal publishing specialist and was promoted that October to associate deputy reporter of decisions, the SJC said.

Previously, she practiced employment law at Boston firm Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete and “edited treatises on federal and state wage and hour law for the American Bar Association and Bloomberg BNA Books,” according to the court.

Makara, a graduate of Suffolk University Law School, also served for 16 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and Massachusetts Air National Guard as a musician, performing for military and civilian audiences throughout the eastern United States.

The reporter of decisions provides editorial support for the SJC justices and Appeals Court judges, publishes slip opinions daily in electronic format, and administers a contract for the publication of ebook advance sheets and permanent bound volumes of the official reports of the two courts. The reporter also directs the posting and maintenance of content on the reporter of decisions webpages on the court’s website, and on social media.

To date, the reporter has published 490 bound volumes of Massachusetts Reports and 100 bound volumes of Massachusetts Appeals Court Reports, the SJC said.
