Full Job Description

Farella Braun + Martel LLP has an excellent opportunity for an experienced law librarian, or for a senior research librarian looking to assume full responsibility for running a law firm library, as our Manager of Library Services. The ideal candidate will have 3 or more years of law library experience, some supervisory experience, as well as excellent research, mentoring and communication skills. An ALA Accredited MLS or MLIS is required. This position may be a hybrid position working remotely and in our offices, as needed.

The Opportunity: Manager of Library Services

The Manager of Library Services will provide library management, supervision and mentoring to the library staff and research to the firm’s 125 attorneys. This position manages all areas of library operations and activities in the firm, both in the main office in San Francisco and the branch office in St. Helena. The Manager of Library Services develops and maintains a collection of resources, electronic where possible, to support the information needs of attorneys and staff in providing superior legal services.

This position is based in San Francisco, CA but may be a hybrid position working remotely and in our offices, as needed.

The Day-to-Day:

  • Provides reference and research for attorneys and staff in a wide variety of practice areas using both print and online resources.
  • Oversees Reference Librarian ensuring that the best resources for the question or project are consulted.
  • Manages library and office print collections and continually explores the best options and resources for our practice areas within the parameters of budget and space.
  • Provides orientation and on-going training. Promotes resources and manages information available on firm intranet.
  • Peruses daily reports from court monitoring services for actions filed against clients and actions filed in certain practice areas, such as employment or intellectual property, notifying an attorney, Industry Group or Practice Area of items of interest.
  • Manages library finances, including annual budgeting, acquisitions and invoice payments.
  • Negotiates vendor contracts and associated cost recovery for these services. Troubleshoots technical problems with the major services.
  • Cultivates relationships with other librarians in the area by attending regular meetings, joining and actively participating in the local and national law librarians’ associations. Attends seminars and education workshops and events.
  • Arranges filing service.
  • Other duties, tasks or projects that may present themselves or may be assigned.

Requirements:

  • ALA accredited or MLS, MLIS degree required.
  • 3 or more years of law library experience. Law firm, supervisory and management experience preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of legal research tools and ability to teach others.
  • Knowledge of California laws and court system required.
  • Strong computer and technology skills, especially in Microsoft Office applications and library automation software; expertise in searching the Internet; familiarity with informational online services, both legal and nonlegal.
  • Strong commitment to service.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to collaborate with attorneys and all firm staff.
  • Strong management aptitude.
  • High level of initiative and problem solving ability showing creativity and sound analysis and business judgment.
  • Ability to prioritize and work efficiently under pressure.
  • Ability to travel to our St. Helena office occasionally.

Schedule:
