Position Overview

The Manager, Library & Information Services SA & NT works as part of the Federal Court of Australia Library Network to provide a high-level information and research library service to Judges and all other staff of the Federal Court of Australia, the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia and National Native Title Tribunal.

Reporting to the Director, Library and Information Services, the Manager, Library & Information Services SA & NT has primary responsibility for the efficient day to day management of the South Australian library by maintaining and enhancing the South Australian library collections and services within budget; providing library training and induction to Judges, legal and other staff; and contributing to current awareness services produced by the Library Network.

Duties

  • Provide high level information and research library services to Judges and all other staff
    • Respond to requests for information from Judges and all other staff.
    • Consult on and identify purchasing priorities and library issues.
    • Alert Judges and staff to new publications and developments in the library.
    • Keep abreast of the latest legal developments of importance to the jurisdiction of the Courts and the NNTT.
    • Contribute to the current awareness services produced by the Library Network.
  • Maintain and enhance the South Australian library collection and services within budget
    • Manage the maintenance of the Judges’ chambers, Floor libraries and Registries collections in Adelaide and Darwin.
    • Monitor the financial expenditure of the collections and ensure they are within the annual allocation.
    • Select and acquire new publications in accordance with the Collection Development Policy and within budget allocation.
  • Provide Library training and induction for Judges, legal and other staff.
    • Develop and deliver training sessions for Judges, Associates, Registrars and Members.
    • Keep abreast of developments in legal research tools and facilitate training from outside providers/vendors.
  • Leadership skills including the ability to foster team and individual performance.
    • Maintain a productive and harmonious work team in accordance with sound management principles.
    • Lead and motivate staff.
  • Contribute to the strategic and business objectives of the organisation.
    • Complete important projects and tasks within the agreed time frames.
    • Participate in regular national Library Managers’ meetings.
    • Regularly report to the Director, Library and Information Management on the operation of the South Australian Library.
    • Evaluate new technology as a mechanism for improving the delivery of library and information services and better utilisation of resources nationally.
    • Maintain regular liaison with relevant professional bodies and associations in the library and information sector e.g. ALIA, ALLA, AGLIN, AIJA Court Librarians.

Selection Criteria

  • High level library management and leadership skills and experience, preferably within a legal environment including the ability to foster team and individual performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively and collaboratively as part of a team delivering timely and high-quality information services and promoting the library and its services.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, manage and monitor budgets and other financial records.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legal research tools and their application to particular types of legal research and ability to clearly impart information and deliver training, in both individual and group settings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of standard law library practices and procedures.
  • High-level interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to communicate (oral and written) and negotiate effectively with a range of stakeholders at all levels, maintaining a high level of discretion in relation to enquiries.
