The Diekirch bar association on Wednesday confirmed that one of its members was the victim in an attempted murder that shook Ettelbruck in June.
In a press release following its annual general assembly, the bar association said it “vehemently condemns the acts of violence committed against lawyers and, in particular, the assassination attempt carried out against one of its members on 12 June, 2026.”
The 34-year-old lawyer sustained serious though not life-threatening injuries in the attack near his home. Several witnesses at the scene intervened to help the victim and stop the attack, according to the Diekirch public prosecutor’s office.
The suspect, a 53-year-old man, was arrested by police in a nearby street shortly after the incident. “The victim had worked as an insolvency administrator in the context of the suspect’s bankruptcy proceedings,” the public prosecutor’s office said at the time.
“This exceptionally serious attack highlights the risks to which lawyers may be exposed when carrying out duties assigned by the courts, particularly in their capacity as trustees or in the context of measures to protect adults,” the bar association statement read.
Attacks on lawyers not isolated incidents
It added that while events like the June attack are “entirely exceptional in their severity”, they are “by no means isolated incidents”.
The statement said that lawyers called upon to perform duties as judicial officers – particularly as bankruptcy trustees or in the context of protective measures for adults – regularly report threats, verbal abuse and sometimes even physical violence when performing their duties.
The bar association has had a meeting with the Diekirch public prosecutor and the district’s presiding judge to discuss the risks faced by their members.
The association also said that it was standing by the victim and would provide him with assistance in any steps he decides to take in the wake of the June attack
“Ensuring that lawyers can practice their profession without fear of threats, intimidation, or violence is an indispensable condition for the proper functioning of the justice system,” the bar association concluded.
