Louisville attorney Lonita Baker was sworn in as the 80th president of the National Bar Association at the organization’s annual conference in Memphis Thursday.
NBA member and Jefferson Circuit Court Judge Brian Edwards administered the oath.
The National Bar Association was founded in 1925 and is the nation’s oldest and largest national network of predominantly African-American attorneys and judges. It represents the interests of approximately 65,000 lawyers, judges, law professors and law students.
Baker is a Louisville native and a graduate of Ballard High School and the University of Louisville, where she earned both her undergraduate and law degrees.
She has practiced as a public defender, a county attorney, in private practice as a civil rights attorney and currently serves as corporate counsel for Waystar, a Louisville health-care-related company. While in private practice, Baker was a member of the legal team that won the estate of Breonna Taylor a $12 million settlement.
