Trends in the news and business information market are resulting in a change of delivery models, from product solutions to the application of technology to workflows, including Big Data, Analytics, and AI
BIS provides business information solutions for professionals, globally across over 100 countries (including the US, Europe, Middle East and Asia Pacific). By combining a deep understanding of the markets in which we operate, with technology innovation, BIS enables smart business decisions and increased efficiency.
The Research Segment is the largest Segment within the BIS business and is focussed on those professionals who do research as part of their day to day, including diverse personas such as journalists, TV producers, strategy professionals, fundraising executives, real estate brokers, university students and information professionals/librarians. Products and services include online information services (e.g., Nexis and (for the academic market the newly launched NexisUni), and solutions (e.g., LexisNexis for Development Professionals). Customers include financial services, corporates, consulting firms, accountancy firms, public sector bodies and academic institutions.
The Role:
This role works closely with the General Manager of the Research business and with other senior stakeholders across BIS including the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), to set the medium-long term strategy of the Research business, providing high quality timely analysis and informed recommendations on commercial and go-to-market strategy, acquisitions, divestments, market characteristics and competitive dynamics.
We operate in a highly collaborative and supportive culture where team players are able to lead discrete deliverables as well as shift to participate in additional projects as necessary across the team.
We are looking for someone who can independently manage and deliver strategy projects together with providing support to the wider Senior Leadership team. Although at its heart a core strategy role, the role will suit someone looking to gain further commercial skills, as the role also includes ensuring implementation and monitoring of strategy and delivering results to accelerate BIS growth.
Summary:
Conduct analysis, set out and drive the overall research Segment strategy in the medium-long term: it is a cohesive plan covering all products and market channels plus supporting resources to achieve targets
Conduct market segmentation, into highly defined and distinct sub-segments, to facilitate targeted plans and inform prioritisation
Planning what to launch, when and to whom and inputting on the ‘how’ with Sales and Segment Marketers and the Segment Portfolio Manager
Identifying and validating new opportunities within the Segment, sizing opportunity and business plan formulation
Define, track and monitor Segment success metrics which measure how we know our strategy is winning
Identify longer-term investment and product development opportunities / priorities for the Segment

Key Competencies:
Ability to adapt and become an active member of a supportive, collaborative and team oriented culture
Strong background in successfully collaborating, motivating, influencing and coordinating other stakeholders (who are not in your teams) to deliver results, in particular within complex matrix environment where the resource is not within your direct management/control eg the ‘virtual’ segment team
Ownership and management of projects to address and solve key strategic issues facing the Research business including delivering high quality results to planned timescales
Manage multiple concurrent projects, keeping stakeholders updated and timelines on track
Strong strategic and intellectual capability combined with creative / innovative thinking
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with emphasis on confidence and composure required to effectively communicate with senior management
Create effective / impactful presentations to summarize complex ideas and recommendations
Strong relationship building skills with proven ability to influence without authority across peers and superiors and drive projects with little direction
Implementation oriented with recommendations grounded in reality, willing to roll-up-sleeves and ‘get hands dirty’ as required
Qualifications:
Strategy consulting experience either within a top tier strategy house or in a strategy capacity of leading multinational corporate (minimum 2 years consulting)
Must have completed client based strategy engagements and (ideally) commercial due diligence
Familiarity with B2B information industry, software, or services preferred
MBA preferred (but not mandatory), all relevant education and experience will be considered
Excellent working knowledge of Word, Excel & PowerPoint
