Job Description
The Opportunity
The Law Library at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law is Canada’s newest academic Law Library and the newest branch of an expanding University Library system at Toronto Metropolitan University. We are currently recruiting for a law librarian to join our team.
As a new Law Library our mission is to:
- Build collections that support research and teaching at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law
- Develop instructional programmes designed to build the legal research skills of students at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law
- Develop library services in support of faculty research and student success
- Develop online resources, services and programs that advance the Law Library as a vital resource for the University’s scholarly, research and creative activities (SRC).
- Reporting to the Head Law Librarian, the successful candidate will work closely with the Law Library team and colleagues from the University
- Library to provide instruction in legal research, both in real time and through the development of online teaching resources. The successful candidate will support the legal research needs of faculty and students at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law as well as the broader University community.

Required qualifications:
- Completion of an ALA accredited Masters degree in Library Science or Information Science, JD or equivalent preferred;
- A minimum of 2 (two) years’ experience as a law librarian in an academic, law firm, government or research institution setting;
- Strong understanding of scholarly communications and the role of emerging technologies in supporting legal education;
- Knowledge of best practices and emerging developments/trends in academic law libraries and in legal education;
- Demonstrated experience teaching legal research in an academic, law firm, government or research institution setting;
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially with colleagues, faculty and administrators and the external community;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
- Knowledge of the principles of organization of information;
- Research skills using a variety of tools;
- Bibliographic and full-text computer database search skills;
- Instructional and training skills;
- Creativity in the design of instructional methods and materials and in the development of new library procedures and programs;
- Excellent technical writing, workflow documentation skills strong analytical;
- Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and analytical skills;
- Aptitude for detail-oriented work and ability to learn new skills quickly and to meet deadlines;
- Knowledge of web page design and HTML coding;
- Knowledge of trends in reference and research services and the delivery of library and information services in the educational environment;
- Supervisory and leadership skills, client service skills, interpersonal and organizational skills;
- Oral and written communication skills;
- The ability to work independently and with a variety of people, including librarians, support staff, students, faculty and administration;
- Collection development and management skills; and
- Tact and diplomacy to deal with difficult people along with strong service-orientation.
