Librarian – Cataloguing Projects Australian Government Solicitor Canberra ACT

The Library Services Team is seeking expressions of interest from librarians with experience in cataloguing and data clean-up. The Librarian – Cataloguing Projects will be responsible for reviewing current catalogue data, correcting inconsistencies and merging records, and updating Australian National Bibliographic Database (ANBD) holdings to reflect cancelled titles. They will also be auditing authorities and merging where appropriate. Original and copy cataloguing of unique Royal Commission collections will also be undertaken.

About the role
The Library Services Team provides a highly valued service for legal resources to the lawyers and officers across the Attorney-General’s Department. This role is based in Canberra for 12 months. The library has in the past 3 years merged 2 library management systems after 2 library collections were merged in 2016.

In this role you will:

  • draw upon your cataloguing knowledge and skills to identify and rectify inconsistencies in catalogue data
  • undertake original and copy cataloging; editing catalogue records of library materials to conform to professional standards, and to assure the accuracy of bibliographic description
  • audit and update authority lists with attention to consistency and detail
  • update the ANBD with current holdings
  • review and update AGD Library Management System (Libero) to close off no longer current holdings
  • assist with stocktake data analysis and other collection projects.

About you
Candidates for this position should have:

  • a tertiary qualification which confers eligibility for professional Membership of Australian Library & Information Association
  • demonstrated experience in library cataloguing including the ability to catalogue to Libraries Australia standards
  • excellent knowledge of and extensive library experience in at least one of the following areas:
  • original and copy cataloguing of library material in various formats using cataloguing standards and tools
  • creating, editing or quality assuring metadata used to describe digital resources for inclusion in library databases.
  • strong digital literacy skills and experience working in an online environment with the ability to quickly adapt to new systems.
