LexisNexis Accepting Applicants for Fourth Cohort of Legal Tech Accelerator

Legal market start-ups receive hands-on mentoring, access to cutting-edge tools, technologies and other unique benefits designed advance their businesses

July 15, 2019 — Raleigh, NC – LexisNexis today announced that it is accepting applications for the fourth cohort of the LexisNexis Legal Tech Accelerator. The program is designed to give start-ups a leg-up in the rapidly expanding legal tech industry. The accelerator leverages LexisNexis deep expertise in legal, technology and start-up domains, and industry-leading market position to advise and incubate program participants.

The Accelerator will run September through December 2019 and will be co-located in the Menlo Park, CA offices of Lex Machina and at the LexisNexis Raleigh Technology Center in Raleigh, NC. The program will again be led by Lex Machina CEO, Josh Becker; Chief Evangelist, Owen Byrd; and LexisNexis Vice President of Product Management, Jeff Pfeifer; with additional support from LexisNexis Chief Technology Officer, Jeff Riehl, and Chief Product Officer, Jamie Buckley.

“After three successful cohorts, we are pleased to announce the next round of our Tech Accelerator,” said Jeff Pfeifer. “As an organization, we believe deeply in the power of accelerator programs to create and nurture a climate of innovation in the legal market. Each year, we are increasingly impressed by the depth and quality of applicants to our program.”

“The legal tech world is relatively small compared to other tech specialties. Having the expertise and support of LexisNexis was an opportunity that I knew would benefit both the development of my company and my personal growth as a founder,” said Kisha Brown, CEO of Justis Connection. “I was exposed to so much information during my six weeks in the LexisNexis Legal Tech Accelerator, ranging from sales and marketing advice to fundraising and pitching strategies.”

As part of the three-month program, accelerator organizations will participate in a rigorous curriculum designed especially for early-stage companies in the legal market:

  • Tools: Access to cutting-edge tools and technologies from LexisNexis and Lex Machina
  • Mentorship: Weekly hands-on sessions with LexisNexis executives on growing legal tech companies, and ad hoc discussions with other LexisNexis executives about technology, user experience & design, product development, product marketing and other topics
  • Education: One-hour strategy sessions on a variety of topics, including marketing and selling to legal departments; running an agile product development organization; leveraging legal data; best practices in customer service, employee management, marketing and funding
  • Connections: Leverage relationships with Stanford and other Bay-Area schools, businesses, VCs and other influencers
  • Workspace: Space for up to four people inside the exciting Lex Machina offices in Menlo Park, CA or in the LexisNexis Raleigh Technology Center on the North Carolina State University Centennial Campus

Legal Tech Accelerator participants will also have access to cutting-edge tools and technologies from LexisNexis and will be able to leverage the company’s established relationships with Stanford University, North Carolina State University, Silicon Valley businesses, VCs and influencers to grow their organizations.

“Lex Machina has deep roots in Silicon Valley and LexisNexis is deeply connected in North Carolina’s Research Triangle”, noted Josh Becker, CEO of Lex Machina. “Being actively involved in Stanford University’s CODEX program, and having started as a special interest project at Stanford before spinning off as a start-up, we know first-hand the struggles that legal tech start-ups go through. The goal of our program is to directly address the unique market challenges of launching a company in the legal market.”

Launch of the LexisNexis Legal Tech Accelerator complements a recent announcement by LexisNexis of its support for the Duke Law Tech Lab. LexisNexis and the Duke Center on Law & Tech are working to develop complementary programs that catalyze new legal tech companies and enhance access to legal services. Together, we hope to foster community and connections among legal tech entrepreneurs and leaders and amplify innovation for not only the companies directly involved, but also for the larger legal ecosystem.

Jointly, LexisNexis and the Duke Center on Law & Tech see both accelerator programs as part of a broad and growing ecosystem of support for legal tech companies at all stages in their development. As such, the Duke Law Tech Lab and the LexisNexis Legal Tech accelerator both help selected companies navigate the legal tech start-up environment and find the paths that are right for each individual team.
