Thomson Reuters Institute‘s 2026 AI report reads like

a profession that panic-bought a Peloton and is now figuring out where to plug it in.

Adoption is everywhere. 55% of firms use general AI tools, 35% are using legal-specific ones, and 30% are hitting AI multiple times a day like it owes them money. Research, document review, and summarization are the obvious favorites, and now “agentic AI” has entered the chat, with 16% already letting it handle chunks of work. At the same time, fears about job loss, revenue dips, and unauthorized practice are ticking up year over year. Yet only 15% of firms are measuring ROI. So to recap: we’re excited, hopeful, mildly terrified, using it constantly, and mostly not tracking whether it’s actually profitable. Sounds like a recipe for chaos.
