Full Job Description

Contract Legal Blog Writer, FindLaw.com

Job Description
About
Do you want to grow as a writer? Do you want your byline on posts that can be read by hundreds of thousands of people? The FindLaw Audience team is looking for writers who can regularly produce posts for our Legal Blogs. These posts can range from explaining how the law affects your everyday life, breaking down legal battles in the news, or helping young lawyers navigate their careers.

We are looking for legal writers to write new legal blogs, edit blogs from other writers, and review and refresh older blog post content for FindLaw.com. We are looking for two different positions: (1) a writer for our Consumer Blogs; (2) a writer for our Legal Professionals blogs; or, a writer who can write a combination of the two.

The Company
FindLaw.com is the number one destination for consumers with legal needs, with more than 8 million visits each month. It is home to the largest online legal directory. As a trusted source, millions of consumers and lawyers turn to FindLaw.com to learn about a legal topic, solve a legal problem, get practice tips, or find a lawyer. It’s your content that makes this happen. FindLaw blog posts explain how the law affects your everyday life, break down legal battles in the news, and help young lawyers navigate their careers.

To get a better idea of what we’re about, check us out: https://www.findlaw.com/legalblogs/

We have 2 different general categories of blogs: Consumer (those geared for a lay audience) and Legal Professionals (those geared towards attorneys, JDs, or those verse in the law).
The following are examples of Consumer blogs:

  • https://www.findlaw.com/legalblogs/law-and-life/death-and-digital-privacy-please-delete-my-browser-history-bro/
  • https://www.findlaw.com/legalblogs/legally-weird/art-or-ad-a-bitter-battle-over-sweet-treats/
  • The following are examples of Legal Professionals blogs:
  • https://www.findlaw.com/legalblogs/practice-of-law/bumpy-road-ahead-for-all-in-adoption-of-ai-in-the-legal-industry/
  • https://www.findlaw.com/legalblogs/practice-of-law/why-should-we-care-about-the-ninth-amendment/

Job Duties

  • Write assigned blog topics, and make revisions based on the Sr. Editor’s comments
  • Pitch your own blog ideas for legal topics that are trending or in the news
  • Look at existing blog posts on FindLaw.com and research, edit, and write additional content where necessary to ensure legal accuracy, clean up grammatical errors, and meet current best practices for web content
  • Use keyword research and other performance tools to ensure your content is optimized for search performance
  • Write new blog posts as necessary on current events and evergreen-based legal topics

Experience and skills

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in English, Communications, Journalism, Marketing or a related major
  • For writing Legal Professionals blogs: J.D. required
  • For writing Consumer blogs: J.D. preferred, but not required with relevant experience (legislative, legal writing, paralegal, etc.)
  • 2+ years of professional writing or editing experience required
  • Legal writing and research experience preferred
  • Excellent research and writing skills, with the ability to research, write, and edit precisely and succinctly on tight deadlines
  • Ability to write with a voice that is appropriate for the subject matter
  • Comfort with editor review of content and constructive criticism
  • Basic understanding of WordPress or other CMSs or ability to quickly learn
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills
  • Ability to work independently

The ideal match will be:

  • Able to write clearly to a consumer audience: Even blog posts geared toward young lawyers can have utility to the general public. We pride ourselves on being a team of experienced legal writers who don’t write like lawyers. You should be able to (or willing to learn how) write for a lay audience.
  • Creative: Depending on the topic, we can get silly, sarcastic, and biting with our writing. If you want to write with voice, this may be the opportunity for you!
  • Able to take feedback: Every post is edited by a Sr. Editor or Sr. Writer before publishing. You will need to be able to take and learn from constructive criticism about your writing.
  • Detail-oriented: While we do not provide legal advice, readers do turn to FindLaw for information that is accurate and will help get them started on their journey.
