Will they make beautiful music for lawyers?

Legal Technology.com

In a market crowded with legal AI tools promising faster drafting, smarter research, and greater efficiency, Thelonious is tackling a different challenge: helping legal and policy professionals keep pace with the global explosion of AI regulation, litigation, and governance developments.

Developed by the Birdella Group, Thelonious combines AI-powered monitoring with human legal expertise to deliver verified, actionable insights. Here, its founders tell us everything you need to know about the work the company does, its founders, strategy and, of course, a little something you won’t find out anywhere else.

How would you describe your company to a friend?

We provide a “human-verified” intelligence platform for lawyers so they can stay on top of the messy, fast-moving world of AI law and policy without having to do all the manual research themselves.

And to a techy?

Thelonious is a human-verified intelligence and knowledge platform that tracks the global AI legal and Policy landscape in real-time, providing dynamic data grids and primary source evidence.

When were you founded?

We announced Thelonious to the world in April 2026!

By who?

The Birdella Group

Who are your key managers/senior execs?

CEO : Victoria Furniss – Victoria Furniss is co-founder and CEO of The Birdella Group. She is an entertainment and technology executive with 25 years of experience working in and for audio visual and tech companies around the globe.

At Netflix and Warner Bros. she led multiple teams dedicated to connecting the worlds of creativity and technology, and is a deep expert on copyright, trademarks, piracy and AI. She is well known across the entertainment industry and was responsible for setting up the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment, a coalition that brought together the Hollywood studios with streaming and tech companies to address issues impacting both sectors.

She is doing the same with Birdella; finding solutions so that creativity and innovation can work together and benefit from advancements in technology.

Profile imageCTO : Bret Boivin – Bret Boivin is an experienced technologist and co-founder of Birdella, where he leads the company’s technology efforts as CTO. He was previously the co-founder and CTO of Incopro, a brand and content protection company that safeguarded over 750 global brands, including Richemont, Reckitt Benckiser, and Harley Davidson. Bret made his mark as a Systems Engineer at Warner Bros., working on a wide range of projects, including security for the studio’s first massively multiplayer online game.

He later transitioned into managing internet anti-piracy operations, covering the UK, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East for both Warner Bros. and NBC Universal. Having worked in both the film industry and with hundreds of global brands, Bret has broken new ground in content protection and anti-counterfeiting technologies.

He has helped shape strategic direction and offers a unique perspective on the real needs of content owners and brands. Today, he brings that extensive experience to helping clients protect their intellectual property in the age of AI.

CSO : John Byrne – John Byrne has worked with media and tech companies over many years, in many capacities (e.g., advisor, board member, investor). He is a co-founder of The Birdella Group and is a strategic advisor to the Board. As a lawyer, he has represented a range of media and music companies.

He was head of Dorsey & Whitney’s London office and is the co-founder of Therium, one of the earliest litigation funding businesses in Europe.

While in private practice, Chambers rated him as “one of the UK’s best business lawyers”.

Who are your target clients?

Primarily IP leads at law firms and in-house legal teams, as well as General Counsels, legal ops heads, and partners with AI practices.

What is your plan (growth strategy)?

Our immediate growth strategy is a phased 90-day rollout: establish market authority, generate enterprise demand through targeted outreach, and convert trial users to our established client base. A key milestone in this pipeline is planning an upcoming platform showcase webinar, designed to demonstrate our live intelligence capabilities to a broader enterprise audience.

Key achievements?

Launching the ICYMI by Thelonious newsletter and Substack. Establishing a live inventory of AI assets and global litigation tracking across 145+ jurisdictions, and successfully positioning the platform as a necessary key component to tracking AI Policy and Regulations. More recently we’ve introduced Thelonious Research into the platform. Thelonious research delivers proprietary intelligence on foundation models, vendor risk, and regulatory frameworks. It synthesises real-time litigation dockets, supranational mandates, and complex licensing data to identify material compliance risks for enterprise adopters. This dynamic intelligence empowers legal and corporate executives to navigate a fragmented tech landscape with structural precision.

Have you received investment?

No – as it stands we have managed to fund the ongoing development of the platform and the subsequent marketing internally.

Have there been any key changes in direction since you were founded?

Rather than a change in direction, our journey has been about disciplined execution and rapid validation of our original business plan. Because our core strategy has proven highly effective, we’ve been able to focus entirely on scaling rather than pivoting. This sustained momentum has allowed us to more than double our team from 4 to 9 members recently, and we are continuing to recruit top-tier talent to support our upward trajectory.

What are the key challenges in your market?

? The rapid pace of regulatory change (e.g., the EU AI Act updating three times in 90 days).

? The risk of “fictitious” AI-generated citations in legal work (as seen in Payne v. The State).

? The need to differentiate from “document review” tools to prove the value of an external intelligence layer.

Thelonious resolves all these challenges by continually monitoring for updates and when these updates are discovered they are human-verified to alleviate layers worries regarding hallucinations.

Tell us something people don’t already know about the company?

At the end of the weekly team meeting one of the team members (who will remain anonymous) chooses a song of the week related to a comment or issue made during the meeting.

Another team member played cricket for Hampshire and was once a contestant on the TV show Runaround in the 1980’s

And finally, our CEO once starred in a short film alongside acclaimed English actor Eddie Marsan.
