Melbourne Law School is Australia’s first all-graduate law faculty. Melbourne Law School was the first faculty in Australia to teach law and awarded this country’s first law degrees. The Law School is a single department faculty located in a custom designed building in University Square. The Law School has approximately 2,200 graduate students (including JD, Melbourne Law Masters and Research High Degrees).

About the Role

This role is positioned with the Legal Academic Skills Centre at MLS which supports JD, Masters, and PhD students with resources and programs designed to foster skill development. The LASC takes a coaching approach and grounds all programs and resources in the knowledge that everyone can improve their skills throughout their studies and professional lives. The legal research advisor will work closely with academic and professional staff, particularly the Director of the LASC and law librarian colleagues, and play an important role in the design and delivery of legal research workshops as well as in the provision of student support and academic enrichment related to research skills.

In a typical week at work, you may:

  • Utilise legal research skills pedagogy and a variety of teaching methods, design and deliver workshops, and present short courses and group tutorials.
  • Review and develop high quality print and online research and review materials and advice for law students.
  • Work with academic and Law Library staff to monitor, review and evaluate research skills programs and develop strategies for continual improvement.
  • Provide customised legal research support to Melbourne Law School students.

About You

You will initiate and build effective relationships with colleagues and students. You are a strong team player who thrives in working collaboratively and are motivated to share your knowledge and skills.

Ideally, you will further have:

  • A legal qualification.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver effective legal research skills programs within a tertiary environment.
  • Depth of knowledge and skills for learning and teaching in higher education, such as pedagogy, learning design and digital learning.
  • Demonstrated experience in and capacity to engage with new technologies in teaching and learning environments.
  • Sound organisational and time management skills, including the ability to set priorities and perform well under pressure.
