Legal Librarian Caterpillar Deerfield Illinois

Legal librarians manage, maintain, organize and retrieve legal information. The responsibilities of this position are as follows:

§ Develop and manage a comprehensive electronic legal opinion library

§ Serve as the liaison for attorneys and paralegals as they seek out legal opinions on file, before engaging outside counsel to help reduce outside counsel spend where appropriate

§ Recommend and implement new information management technologies

§ Manage publication vendor relationships

§ Manage electronic content (eg. files, databases)

§ Maintain Subscriptions for research materials

§ Serve as a central resource for managing knowledge and information across the division

§ Apply knowledge of legal information in the maintenance of a classification/metadata scheme

§ Provide guidance and training on the use and availability of resources and legal research capabilities

§ Advise legal staff on best techniques to perform complex research, including locating federal statutes, regulations, cases, international treaties, conventions, and agreements

§ Create procedural and informational pathfinders, bibliographies, and other documentation

Skills needed:
Excellent research, analytical skills and a working knowledge of legal reference sources, publications, and computerized legal research platforms are essential.

Strong critical-thinking and problem-solving skills are required to analyze and identify the best research resources and to resolve complex issues.

Proven track record of creating and managing a legal library.

Qualifications

Experience:
Master of Library Science (MLS) degree from an ALA-accredited institution
Demonstrated knowledge of search technologies and concrete, advanced information retrieval techniques
Experienced user of Lexis, Westlaw, and other common legal information platforms
Demonstrated knowledge of the traditional legal research method
Knowledge of cataloging principles, practices, and systems
Enthusiastic commitment to customer service
Excellent written and verbal communications skills
Flexibility and strong interpersonal skills
Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively
Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a librarian in a law firm, in-house legal department or law school.
