Law scholar allegedly used con Justin Bieber to lure kids

A former university law professor who allegedly impersonated singer Justin Bieber, allegedly to convince young children to send him explicit pictures, will be on trial on 202 counts.

Gordon Douglas Chalmers, a former law professor at the Queensland University of Technology, was arrested in 2016 and brought to justice in 2017 on more than 900 counts.

The Crown is currently on trial in district court on 202 counts, relating to indecent communications with around 200 alleged child victims.

The charges include possession and manufacture of child exploitation material and the use of a transportation service for child pornography.

Police allege Chalmers, in his mid-forties, used multiple online platforms, including Facebook and Skype, to contact his alleged victims.

The alleged infringements date back at least to 2007.

Chalmers, who has been in custody since his arrest, appeared briefly in Brisbane District Court Thursday.

The court heard that Chalmers was in the process of changing lawyers and that legal aid funding had yet to be transferred to a new law firm.

A preliminary hearing scheduled for October 19 for a legal argument has been canceled.

Chalmers is due in court on Monday, October 12, when the case is brought up again. A test date has not yet been set.

Chalmers came to police attention after German Federal Police and US Homeland Security contacted Australian Federal Police, a court has already heard.

His Kenmore house was searched by detectives.
