Salary Range: $58,500 – $65,000

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Law Library Specialist supports reference and instructional activities in the Law Library, under the guidance of the Head of Public Services and designated librarian staff. The position assists with the provision of general and legal reference assistance to law library patrons, and will have an opportunity to teach aspects of legal research to law students. The position also participates in other library projects such as the development of instructional guides and planning initiatives.

Responsibilities

Assists with reference desk shifts and research requests. Provides instruction on the use of reference material. Responds to client requests for legal information; provides legal bibliographic research services to clients by using legal research guides, indices, legal databases, and the Internet to identify appropriate material. Uses knowledge of legal publishing and the Law Library’s collection to determine which titles in the catalog may contain appropriate material in response to patron requests; identifies appropriate excerpts to provide to patrons.

Participates in research-related classroom instruction. Provides guest lectures and presentations on specialty areas in legal research.

Supports Head of Public Services with administering various projects including reporting for planning initiatives.

Shadows librarians to develop skill and expertise in utilizing library research databases and to provide assistance and training to library patrons.

Performs other library-related tasks and coordinates projects as assigned by the Department Head.

Pursues professional development activities to improve knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 1-2 years’ legal research experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. MLIS or currently enrolled or committed to enroll in an MLS/MLIS program

Proficiency using Internet and web-based information tools and legal research systems.
