Full Job Description
The Supreme Court of Montana seeks a Law Librarian to head the State Law Library located in Helena, Montana. The law librarian position is highly technical and involves the development and maintenance of the law library collection and services to fulfill the needs of the library users. The law librarian provides strategic vision and operational management of the Law Library.

The Law Librarian reports to the Court Administrator and is appointed by the Montana Supreme Court.

The Law Librarian’s key duties include:
Supervises six employees. Assigns work, monitors progress, and evaluates staff performance. Assists with hiring and training of new employees. Provides staff with professional support and development. Provides back-up support for staff position work.
Responsible for selecting, acquiring, cataloging, and maintaining the law library collection, including laws, court decisions, law reports, treatises and textbooks, legal periodicals, journals, pamphlets, and other miscellaneous resources. Oversees the classification of new items according to library classification schedules and guidelines. Oversees the design and implementation of systematic evaluation of the law library collection regarding condition, retention, arrangement, and usage.
Oversees legal research in all information formats and training of library users in research resources. Oversees development and delivery of electronic legal research tools and resources.
Oversees the law library budget. Prepares and monitors expenditures, prepares reports, and recommends projections of library spending. Responsible for vendor contract management.
Responsible for managing the law library space and facilities, including ensuring library patrons with appropriate library operations and services.
Organizes and supervises library programs and services. Promotes library services and stays abreast of issues related to legal topics and library programming and management. May serve on professional boards and/or committees.
Establishes positive relationships with judges and court staff, Montana Supreme Court Justices, Judicial Branch staff, State of Montana employees, the legal community, and pro se litigants.
Assumes a leadership role in Montana in providing services to pro se litigants. Provides legal reference and research to pro se library patrons as needed. Provides legal reference and research to inmates detained within and outside of Montana. The successful candidate must have extensive experience and vision related to serving pro se litigants in a rural environment.

The law librarian works to support the mission of the law library, which is to provide legal information and resources, to enhance knowledge of the law and court system, and to facilitate equal access to justice, statewide.

Special Information:
This is a supervisory and customer service position and work must primarily be performed on-site and within the hours of 8am to 5pm.

Physical Demands:
Work requires extended periods of sitting and occasional walking, standing, reaching, bending, climbing stairs, and standing on a stool. Lifting books and other reference materials weighing less than 25 pounds is required as well as moving a cart with many books loaded on it. Work requires extended periods of computer use.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have a master’s degree in Library Science and a juris doctorate, along with professional law library work. Experience is required in staff supervision and management, budgeting, contract and/or project management, collaboration, and pro se programming.
