The Law Librarian is the information resource expert on the use of legal and business research resources and facilitates cost-effective legal research through their extensive knowledge of print and electronic media. The librarian must develop, maintain, and administer a collection of legal documents, manuals, and other material to aide those performing legal research.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Plans, prioritizes, organizes and directs all phases of the County law library program, working cooperatively with the County Clerk in planning policies and procedures for the progressive development of the library and maintaining a positive image and relations between the library and the local legal community.
Maintains a database of resources checked out by local attorneys; sends late notices when overdue.
Makes oral and written presentations to the Law Library Board of Advisors to recommend acquisitions and coordinates presentations to the Board by vendors.
Performs a variety of secretarial functions involved in day-to-day operating of the library, including preparing correspondence, preparing receipts and reports for the Auditor’s Office for the cash taken in each day.
Administers routine personnel matters affecting subordinates, including interviewing applicants, evaluating, disciplining, ensuring adherence to established policies, procedures and standards, assists, and advises, as necessary, resolving problems as non-routine situations arise.
Works directly with the County Clerk Administration in ordering supplies, library materials, and all legal books and supplements according to budgetary restraints.
Acquires, catalogues, classifies, circulates, and maintains library materials.
Furnishes reference, bibliographical, and readers advisory services.
Researches standard reference materials, including on-line resources in order to answer reference questions.
Assists library patrons searching for information using databases.
Directs and trains library staff in duties such as receiving, shelving, researching, cataloging, and equipment use.
Responds to customer complaints and special requests.
Develops library policies and procedures.
Evaluates materials to determine if outdated or unused items should be replaced.
Plans and delivers client-centered programs and services such as special services for newsletters, programs for special groups, or storytelling for children.
Assembles and arranges display materials.
Negotiates contracts for library services, materials, and equipment as necessary.
Responds to inquiries received via telephone, in person, or emails.
Creates and maintains reports necessary for budgetary purposes.
Reviews invoices to ensure all books/periodicals/correspondences are received; scans and sends invoices to Admin.
Regular and punctual attendance is required.
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree in Library Science from an accredited American Library Association (ALA) institution and one year of related experience required.
