“The book is about negligence law, in particular considering duty, causation and evidentiary issues that arise when a person is seeking to be made whole after an injury,” Butler said. “Each state has its own chapter, describing the state of its law.”
Butler responded to a call for contributors posted by the book’s editor, Lee F. Peoples, interim dean and Frederick Charles Hicks professor of law at Oklahoma City University School of Law. She wrote chapters on Georgia, New York and Oregon law.
“The editors gave clear guidance about their expectations, the scope of the information they wanted included and how we should structure the chapters. Lee was great to work with, as he provided thoughtful feedback and clear communication,” Butler said.
She hopes that attorneys and judges will find the book helpful when advocating for their clients and deciding cases. Peoples recently spoke at the Mississippi Judicial Conference and said lawyers purchased a copy of the book for every judge in the state.
Butler said that working on the book has helped enhanced her teaching.
“I have been able to incorporate legal issues and policy factors I considered when writing into my teaching for both the legal research course and for foreign students earning their LLM degrees. I could coordinate a bit with my students’ torts professor to build connections and, I hope, improve student learning,” she said.
