A full-time, non-merit vacancy exists in the Criminal and Civil Adjudication Division for the Circuit Court of Baltimore County.

Non-Merit positions are not classified within the Baltimore County Government Classification and Compensation Plan.

This position offers full county benefits and five annual incremental steps with longevity increases at years 6, 10, 15, 25 and 29.

A list of eligible applicants will be established based on the examination as outlined below.

Examples of Duties

Under general supervision, the Law Library Assistant assists the Director and Associate Librarians in the Law Library for the Circuit Court for Baltimore County. This position reports to the Director and may be assigned tasks by the Associate Law Librarian.

Essential Duties
Greets people entering the Law Library and directs them to the appropriate resources.
Answers reference questions (in person and via phone and e-mail).
Assists patrons with obtaining appropriate forms or examples.
Assists patrons with using library materials in all formats (print, online, microfilm).
Keeps legal treatises and loose-leaf services current by filing updates, pocket parts and other supplementation.
Performs general and library-specific clerical tasks.
Maintains copiers and copier/printer funds account.
Assists patrons with use of the computers and printers.
Assists with preparing newsletter and other informational publications.
Maintains circulation records and serial collection.
Coordinates bindery procedures and serials claims reports.
Sorts, checks-in and processes mail.
Orients law clerks to library services and facilities.
Performs various diversified tasks and special assignments as required.
Troubleshoot computer problems patrons’ experience.

Performs any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Applicants for this position must possess an Associate’s Degree or Higher in Library Science/Information Science from an ALA-accredited program preferred and one year of law library, general library or legal work experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Familiarity with and experience in using law libraries and/or library research skills.
Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Publisher, OneNote, etc.)
Familiar with Windows OS, navigating the internet, and basic troubleshooting of both.
Familiar with the Library of Congress Classification system.
Must be able to adapt to a variety of database interfaces.
Basic knowledge of court systems and legal terminology.
Exercise a high degree of judgement, tact, diplomacy, and competence in dealing with judges, attorneys, government officials, and the public.
Must be self-motivated individual with the ability to work unsupervised

Applicants are required to submit proof of licenses, certifications and education beyond high school to meet the required and preferred qualifications of the position. Diplomas or transcript must show the applicant’s major field of study. Copies and unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
