Something must be improving in the US legal market.
We?re advertising 15 new legal library / knowledge jobs listed in the past two weeks, and that?s not every job we?ve seen advertised, only the more interesting listings.
A quick guesstimate would double our number of positions listed over the past fortnight .
We agree this doesn?t mean an economy in hyperdrive but that?s the 2nd time in the last quarter that we?ve seen a healthy amount of new legal library jobs popping up in the US.
Which, we hasten to add, also provides a bit of ammunition against the few articles we?ve also seen coming up online, asking that hoary old question, ?Do we really need law librarians??
The answer is yes we do ?. and we?d suggest that as much as some organistaions would like to do away with qualified information managers the proof of the pudding that they are needed is reflected in the fact that they are being hired and re-hired.
Yet again it?s been another busy couple of weeks for the publishers.
LLN has seen ?that since the last week of November there?s been more activity from the publishers; especially the big two, than over the past 8 months.
It might be a figment of our imagination and it will have something to do with personnel changes in the top realms of management. But it has been all go over the past few weeks with buys, sells, updates, re-jigs, surveys, statements of intent. You name it they?ve done it since early November.
If you can remember as far back as March / April (We?re struggling too!) you?ll see that business activity really has moved up a notch.
What interests us at LLN is what Lexis will be doing next year in terms of their legal publishing businesses around the world ? Wqill we see more ?smaller? LN outposts being farmed off to companies who can afford them . Will NZ, Malaysia and their ilk be TR Westlaw or Kluwer or even Bloomberg organizations this time next year
